VENICE DOGE’S PALACE – experience the ancient splendor of the Serenissima

The Doge’s Palace in Venice is part of the Venice Civic Museums Foundation and is truly a must-see in Venice; the beating heart of the administrative and political life of the Republic of Venice, it has kept the ancient splendor of the Serenissima alive.

The history of the Doge’s Palace began a long time ago, probably in the 9th century. Over the centuries the building underwent a real transformation, decorated with wonderful constructive and ornamental elements that have made its appearance incredibly elegant: its sumptuous interiors and refined exteriors will leave you speechless. The works on display inside are no less important: admire masterpieces that boast the signature of great artists such as Titian, Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Veronese, undisputed protagonists of art history.

After having crossed the entrance to the Doge’s Palace, you’ll find yourself in the splendid inner courtyard, where the majestic Scala dei Giganti lies, a creation designed by Antonio Rizzo between 1483 and 1485. The staircase leads up to the “logge”, the balconies that boast the most spectacular picture-perfect view of Venice. From here, the marvelous Scala d’Oro will take you to the upper floors, to the Sala del Maggior Consiglio and to the noble floor, which houses the Ducal Apartment.

The ticket to Palazzo Ducale will also allow you to cross the famous Bridge of Sighs and visit the ancient prisons where inmates were locked up in cramped cells and kept in terrible living conditions. Built in the 17th century to link the Doge’s Palace to the Prisons, the Bridge of Sighs owes its peculiar name to the last sigh that prisoners exhaled as "free men" before being locked up.

The Doge’s Palace tickets also include entrance to the Museum of the Opera, where important documents, the capitals that originally adorned the façade and the Armory, which houses weapons and ammunition, are kept.
